Mass shootings since 1966; no legislation

August 4, 2019

Two mass shootings in our country in less than 24 hours, and it's astonishing to me to see social media posters blame the POTUS. Do you realize that during the time OBAMA was president, there were 24 mass shootings? Was he blamed?

There are hundreds of these that happened over the years. My view is an assault rifle has NO business being in the hands of any person unless one is an active duty member of the military serving in another country. I agree those should not be sold to the general public. But the criminals and crazies will get them somehow. We EACH are responsible for our decisions and actions! Those shooters made a personal decision to kill, just as the thief decides to steal, the liar decides to lie.

And in Austin, Texas where I live, on August 1, 1966, a gunman climbed the University of Texas tower and started the first mass shooting in US history. He alone. Did they blame the POTUS then?

Here is a quote from the article, "Presidents and Mass Shootings," published in Spring 2018 on www.nationalaffairs.com  "On August 2, 1966, the day after the shooting, White House press secretary Bill Moyers read a statement by the president that said, 'What happened is not without a lesson: that we must press urgently for the legislation now pending in Congress to help prevent the wrong person from obtaining firearms.' The statement added that "[t]he bill would not prevent all such tragedies. But it would help reduce the unrestricted sale of firearms to those who cannot be trusted in their use and possession."

Yes, in 1994, then-President Bill Clinton signed a law into effect banning assault weapons. However, it was to only last for ten years. Why? And why since then, has a similar law not been passed?! It is beyond my understanding. Likely, it's about money, political action committees and funding from the gun companies. I'm only guessing. This can't continue.

Decades of talk about legislation, and both Democrats and Republicans have done nothing -- that is 53 years! A lifetime for some. Unless you were killed by a shooter with an assault rifle.
